Tzu Chi College of Technology （TCCT）has completed two major funding projects: the Enhancing Literacy Competency and E-cooperative Learning Program, and the Comprehensive Development Project of English Teaching. Both were sponsored by the Ministry of Education through the years of 2002 to 2006, and focused on the improvement of English Teaching programs on campus. Starting in the year 2007, in support of international cooperative educational efforts, funding of the Specialty Cultivation Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education continues to demonstrate the school’s determination to promote effective language teaching, upgrade students’ language competency, and develop contextual teaching materials of campus English, such as self-introduction, greeting, introducing the school, inquiring, talking over phone, touring manners, etc.
A recent visit by the coordinator of the International Study Program of Brigham Young University (BYU) in the Spring of 2006 led BYU and TCCT to implement a volunteer support program, allowing students at both schools to merge their shared value of life, and their unselfish giving for the good of humankind. As a result, the international interns from BYU have, in the past two years, been assisting as volunteers at the Teaching Center of Context English and in the English language classrooms of Tzu Chi College of Technology. This has proven to bring a mutual benefit to our schools in terms of spiritual strengthening, intellectual enlargement, and character building. In evidence of this, the BYU interns have showed a high interest in studying Chinese Calligraphy, Taiwanese cultures, and Tzu Chi Humanities courses in flower arrangement, tea ceremony, and sign language performances. With respect to both schools’ priority of moral education and professional expertise, the proposal of the Tzu Chi Humanities Exchange Program would continue to enlighten college students’ visions of whole-person education in our era of expanding globalization.
